Water Saving Tips

Check every faucet in the house for leaks. A single dripping faucet can waste more water in a single day that one person needs for drinking in an entire week. Don't wait to fix a drip. Do it now!

Saving in the Kitchen

Store drinking water in the refrigerator rather than letting the tap run, when you want a cold glass of water.

Don't let the faucet run when you scrub vegetables or prepare other foods. Put a stopper in the sink instead.

Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods. Defrost food overnight in the refrigerator or use a defrost setting on a microwave.

Fill dishwasher full because it will use the same amount of water for a normal cycle, whether it contains a full load of dishes or just a few items.

When purchasing a new dishwasher, select water and energy efficient models.

If you wash dishes by hand, don't leave water running for rinsing.

Garbage disposal requires lots of water to operate properly. Start a compost pile! Composting scraps will also reduce demand on out landfills and wastewater facilities.

Saving in the Bathroom

Don't let the water run while brushing your teeth or shaving.

Never use your toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket.

Install water saving shower heads and ultra-low flush toilets.

Limit the length of your shower to five minutes or less. Reducing shower time by one minute can save 1,000 gallons of water a year.

Use the minimum amount of water needed for a bath by closing the drain first and filling the tub only 1/3 full.

Recycle and save water at the same time. Fill a plastic, quart-sized milk container with water and put it in your pre-1994 toilet tank, safely away from the operating mechanism. The jug can displace 10 gallons or more of water a day. Bricks are no longer recommended  since they can disintegrate over time and cause jams in plumbing. Be careful not to place the bottles where they will jam the flushing mechanism and make sure you don't displace so much water that you have to double flush. Double flushing wastes more water than you would save!

Saving in the Laundry Room

Use full loads of laundry whenever possible.

Preset washer levels for small, medium, or large loads appropriate for the size of laundry,

When purchasing new washing machines, select water and energy efficient models.
